We met with Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, in his office in Montgomery. EJI represents 14 and 15 year olds who are sentenced to life in prison, as well as adult indigent prisoners. I was shocked when I heard that there were children sentenced to die in prison for crimes they committed when they were so young. What’s more, they received those sentences primarily because the state failed to provide them with competent lawyers.
On the Summer Journey, I was exposed to many of the socio-economic problems that our country faces today and came home with a newfound determination to do whatever I can to fight them. I got to see the many ways these injustices were being combated already and what I can do to help.
