We pulled into Sunflower, Mississippi, a small, quiet town with a population of less than 700 residents. We were greeted by the young leaders from the Sunflower County Freedom Project. The project empowers students who strive to be academically capable, socially conscious and mentally disciplined. Through skits, songs and dances, they shared with us what they learned about the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of their program. The conversations that we engaged in over dinner make me realize how important it is to take advantage of the rights and liberties that many past leaders died for us to have.
